The building was designed to be carbon neutral in operation and to have a low environmental footprint that will educate visitors to the country park. The main focus of the sustainable energy strategy was the use of the lakes to provide the energy source for the space heating and hot water requirements. Lake water supplied to the buildings heat pump is upgraded in temperature to sustain the underfloor heating systems. Electricity was generated from a wind turbine located near to the visitor centre and solar thermal collectors were used to preheat the domestic hot water.
