Project Description

We were commissioned to design a low energy building to provide the college with 33 teaching spaces, a lecture theatre, sports hall and all weather sports pitch.

Thermal modelling was utilised from the outset to predict energy usage and internal temperatures throughout the building. Building integrated photo voltaic panels were designed to meet the base electrical load along with other energy saving enhancements. These include solar thermal collectors, rain-water harvesting, heat recovery and the use of night time cooling. Lighting systems in principal rooms are controlled by daylight modulation and automatic occupancy detection.

We assessed design options at feasibility stage for client review plus supporting grants and ensured compliance with Part L2 of the building regulations through cost benefit study of systems options including renewable elements.

Our study resulted in a carbon rating of the new building of 27.96 kgCO2/m2/year against a notional rating of 30.07 KgCO2/m2/year.
